Just in Time for Spooky Season, You Can Learn More About the Death of Edgar Allan Poe

Charleston Stage produces live theatre of the highest caliber, focusing on plays that excite and incite the imagination, and including indigenous and original works that celebrate the rich heritage and history of the South Carolina Lowcountry. This season, Charleston Stage is proud to present “Nevermore! Voyage Into the Netherworld.” Check it out on Wednesday, October 16th at Dock Street Theatre.

In September of 1847, Edgar Allan Poe boarded a steamer in Baltimore for an overnight trip to New York. Five days later, never having arrived in New York, Poe was found wandering the Baltimore streets delirious and raving mad. Taken to a nearby tavern, he soon died. His death and final days remain a mystery. Nevermore speculates on what might have happened on that final dreary voyage.

The play features scenes from Poe’s own stories, The Telltale Heart, The Gold Bug, The Cask of the Amontillado, and more, and includes Poe’s real visit to Sullivan’s Island in 1817, where some speculate he met the love of his life, Annabelle Lee. “Nevermore! Voyage Into the Netherworld” is written and directed by Julian Wiles.

The name Poe brings to mind images of murderers and madmen, premature burials, and mysterious women who return from the dead. His works have been in print since 1827. This versatile writer’s oeuvre includes short stories, poetry, a novel, a textbook, a book of scientific theory, and hundreds of essays and book reviews. He is widely acknowledged as the inventor of the modern detective story and an innovator in the science fiction genre, but he made his living as America’s first great literary critic and theoretician. Poe’s reputation today rests primarily on his tales of terror as well as his haunting poetry.

Just in time for Halloween, spend a night uncovering the secrets surrounding Edgar Allan Poe’s death at “Nevermore! Voyage Into the Netherworld.” Tickets range from $29 to $67, not including applicable fees. Children under 3 years old are not permitted in the theatre.
